Upon arriving at her ancestral home, Soriya rents an apartment in Metta, a once-thriving Khmer Rouge-era housing complex that now stands as a shadow of its former self. The neighborhood's dilapidated buildings, with their peeling paint and overgrown gardens, bear witness to the city’s tumultuous past.
The initial days are filled with warmth and nostalgia. Soriya is greeted with open arms by her maternal relatives, who share stories and memories that paint a vivid picture of their family’s history. The visits to ancestral gravesites, the feasts prepared with traditional Khmer dishes, and the communal gatherings all serve as poignant reminders of the strength and resilience of her heritage.
However, Soriya soon begins to notice subtle undercurrents beneath the surface of these warm interactions.
